RapSIG is proud to introduce Dr. Susy Jaramillo, Assistant Professor of Marketing at The University of Memphis, as one of the VPs of Communications.

Susy’s career in the business world began within a family of entrepreneurs. Having witnessed the practical implementation of business strategies firsthand, she decided to pursue a degree in business. During her undergraduate and graduate studies, she worked as both a teaching and research assistant for the marketing department, which sparked her interest in academia and marketing research. Following this interest, she worked as an instructor for about six years before embarking on a Ph.D. in Marketing at the University of Alabama.

Susy is particularly interested in researching the role of customers’ and frontline employees’ emotions in services and retail settings, service failures and service recovery, and transformative service research. Susy takes pride in being a first-generation scholar in her family. Despite her parents not attending college, their entrepreneurial expertise inspired her, and she was able to explore the business world from an academic perspective.

Susy advises aspiring scholars to be perseverant, emphasizing that success often comes from persistence rather than brilliance. She quotes Richard Feynman, saying, “I was an ordinary person who studied hard. There’s no miracle people.”

Susy celebrates achievements by sharing them with her support system, including her husband, parents, and extended family. Her celebrations often involve a glass of wine and a cozy movie night under a blanket.

Some of Susy’s non-academic interests are:

  • Spending time with her Persian husband and American cat (Yes!, you read it right!).
  • Writing short stories (in Spanish.)
  • Taking pictures (macro photography.)
  • Watching independent movies.

Fun fact:

While Susy doesn’t remember her first concert, she vividly recalls attending The Killers concert in Bogota, Colombia, describing it as a great experience with Brandon Flowers’ voice not disappointing.
